While staying at Birch Trail Resort, each guest has access to a fully equipped kitchen with all the utensils and pans one would need to cook a feast. Wonderful right? But who wants to do all that work while on vacation! Preparing meals before you head up north allows you the time and freedom to kick back, relax and enjoy your stay without worrying about cooking.
With just a little planning, you can enjoy a carefree trip to Minocqua with most of the meal prep already done before you arrive. Check out the easy make ahead meals, with links to recipes below, for your convenience. Let us know if you make any!
Breakfast Burritos
Breakfast burritos offer a full course meal in one convenient, hand-held package that is easily frozen, warmed and enjoyed. Bonus - involve your family members or spouse in making their own with just the ingredients they like to enjoy some quality family time. Typical options include: sausage, steak, ham or bacon (or all of the above), scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, shredded cheese, and any sautéed vegetable you want! Start by cooking each ingredient separately, gently warming up the tortillas, and setting up an assembly line. After making a single burrito, wrap it in tin foil, and toss it in the freezer. That's it! Bring them up with you in a cooler, and reheat in oven on low for an hour while you enjoy your morning coffee, with your feet propped up, outside the cabin. Detailed instructions here.
Grill Packets
Grill packets are to vacation cooking as paper plates are to a family of 10. They're AMAZING! Simple assembly, simple clean up and oh so delicious. Based on your preferences, you can fill a grill packet with any combination of meat, vegetables, and starches. Typically, there is no actual cooking involved during assembly, just prep your foil, place ingredients inside and seal. These can be made the day before you leave for your trip to ensure the freshest taste. Once your ready, just pop them on the grill or in the oven and let them cook themselves to perfection!
Try these tasty combinations:
Sausage, brussels sprouts, peppers, zucchini, yellow squash and baby red potatoes. Recipe here.
Ham, broccoli, cheddar cheese, carrots and diced russet potatoes. Recipe here.
Mushrooms, onion and steak. Recipe here.
One Dish Meals
One dish meals, or as we called them growing up "casseroles", are excellent make-ahead meals for any occasion. Some you cook fully during prep time, freeze, then reheat while at the cabin. Some you prep raw, then cook fully in the oven/grill. We recommend, if you do opt for grilling, to prepare these recipes in a disposable, aluminum baking pan. Trust us, you'll be thankful during clean up time if you do!

Don't forget those little lunch cravings. Tossing the following recipes together gives you portable lunch options for wherever you may find yourself around noon: beachside, on the boat, biking the trails, or horseback riding.
